can we still be friends?

It was May 1978 when Todd Rundgren released eighth album, Hermit of Mink Hollow. The LP arrived with lead single, "Can We Still Be Friends." As the record created in the wake of Rundgren's very public separation from partner, Bebe Buell, may immediately believed the song was about her.

"No," Rundgren responded to Songfacts when asked if the track was about anyone in particular. "Some people have always said, 'Oh that's a song about this particular person.' I got news for you: I'm still not friends with that person, all right -- and for good reason. It's really a song about the best possible way to end a relationship. It isn't necessarily about a specific person. It's about, perhaps, a specific situation, but I don't have to have experienced something to be able to write a song that other people think represents their experience."

The heartfelt tune was a top 30 hit, climbing as high as #29 on the Hot 100. It was covered just a year later by Robert Palmer, whose version peaked at # 52 on the same chart. In 1994, "Can We Still Be Friends" was used prominently in the hit comedy, Dumb and Dumber, a movie for which Rundgren composed the music.

The original promotional video for the track has been updated and made official on the Rhino YouTube page. It's a straightforward affair, featuring Rundgren singing and playing the piano, with a ballerina dancing atop the piano. Watch it below.
