GRATEFUL DEAD American Beauty 50th Anniversary Cover

First Listen: Grateful Dead, “Sugar Magnolia” (Live at the Capitol Theater, 2/18/71)

Given the sort of people who tend to frequent this website, we’re probably about to deliver some information that’s already well-known to you, but we’re just going to say it anyway: 1970 was a big year for the Grateful Dead.

See? We told you it wasn’t exactly breaking news.

Still, it’s true: not only did they release WORKINGMAN’S DEAD in the summer of ‘70s, but in the fall they released AMERICAN BEAUTY. That’s pretty darned prolific, but then when you consider that both albums have since been defined as among the band’s best, that’s damned near incredible, too. Of course, we’ve already honored WORKINGMAN’S DEAD with an expanded reissue, but you’ll want to go  ahead and circle October 30th on your calendar, since that’s when Rhino gives AMERICAN BEAUTY the same treatment.

AMERICAN BEAUTY: 50TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION is a 3-CD set (it’s also available digitally, of course), and it includes a newly-remastered version of the original album as well as a previously-unreleased concert recorded on February 18, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY.

Don’t worry, vinyl fans: we’ll also be releasing AMERICAN BEAUTY: 50TH ANNIVERSARY VINYL PICTURE DISC on the same day. We should give you fair warning, though, that it’s a limited-edition situation, so if you want to secure one of those 15,000 copies, you should click here to place your order right now.

We can sense your excitement from here, and we know it’s going to be torturous to wait until October 30, so here’s a little something to help you pass the time: the band’s performance of “Sugar Magnolia” from the aforementioned Capitol Theater show.

And with that offered, we’ll close by providing you with the full track listing for these two October 30 releases. Read on, and then go forth and pre-order!
