5 Things You May Not Have Known About Flea
Today we celebrate the birthday of bassist Michael Peter Balzary, but if the name doesnât ring a bell, itâs because you know him better by just one name: Flea. To commemorate this red hot day, weâve put together a list of five things you may or may not have known about this flamboyant musician. Give it a read, wonât you?
- Although the Red Hot Chili Peppers are well-known as a California band, Flea was actually born in Australia.
His parents moved from Melbourne to Rye, New York because of his fatherâs job, but when his mother and father divorced five years later, Fleaâs dad returned to the land down under, and the following year, Fleaâs mom and her new stepfather, jazz bassist Walter Urban, took Flea and his sister, Karyn, to live with them in Los Angeles.
- He was in Francis Ford Coppolaâs The Outsiders.
âI just lucked into this weird, little obscure cameo-esque film career,â Flea once told Rolling Stone, adding, âI just love being a part of film history.â Heâs certainly not alone when it comes to notable names in that filmâs cast, but heâs definitely one who- even after all these years â still makes you go, âWait a minute, was that...?â And it was. But you probably had to rewind it to be sure, because itâs just that quick an appearance.
- He played trumpet on Janeâs Addictionâs NOTHINGâS SHOCKING.
If youâre a Janeâs fan, then you probably know that this wasnât the last time he teamed up with Perry Farrell, either. In addition to popping up on the KETTLE WHISTLE collection, he also appears on âFreeway,â from Porno for Pyrosâ GOOD GODâS URGE.
- Heâs quietly racked up appearances on a number of massive pop hits.
Young M.C.âs âBust a Moveâ? Fleaâs on that. Alanis Morissetteâs âYou Oughta Knowâ? Fleaâs on that. Jewelâs âYou Were Meant for Meâ? Fleaâs on that, too. The guy gets around.
- He ran the 2011 L.A. Marathon for charity.
His cause du jour was the Silverlake Conservatory of Music, and his presence was so high profile that he ended up being interviewed for Runnerâs World magazine, wherein he discussed how he prepared for the race.
