This Day in ’95: Hootie and The Blowfish Blow Past a Chart Record

24 years ago today, Hootie and The Blowfish landed atop the Billboard 200 with their album CRACKED REAR VIEW, which would be an impressive feat all by itself, but what made it particularly special – and, indeed, record-setting – was that it was actually the fifth time it had found its way in the top spot!

Yes, you knew CRACKED REAR VIEW was a musical phenomenon when it was originally released, and you probably also knew that it was a #1 album, but it kept being bounced out of the top spot and then clawing its way back up again.

Here’s how the story goes:

•    May 27, 1995: CRACKED REAR VIEW replaces the soundtrack to the film Friday to arrive at #1 for the first time.
•    June 24, 1995: Pink Floyd’s live album P*U*L*S*E takes over the top spot for a week.
•    July 1, 1995: Hootie’s back.
•    July 8, 1995: Michael Jackson’s combo best-of / new studio album HIStory: Past, Present, and Future, Book 1 kicks Hootie out of #1 and calls the top spot home for two weeks.
•    July 22, 1995: The soundtrack to Disney’s Pocahontas lands at #1.
•    July 29, 1995: Hootie’s back.
•    August 5, 1995: The late, great Selena hits #1.
•    August 12, 1995: Bone Thugs-n-Harmony begins a two-week reign with E: 1999 Eternal.
•    August 26, 1995: Hootie’s back.
•    September 2, 1995: The soundtrack to Dangerous Minds reigns for four weeks.
•    September 30, 1995: Hootie’s back for the last time...so far.
