This Day in 2003: Ozzy and Kelly Osbourne Top the UK Singles Chart

13 years ago today, Ozzy Osbourne and Kelly Osbourne became one of the rare father-daughter duos to ascend to the top of the UK Singles chart, doing so with a song that Ozzy had originally recorded as a member of Black Sabbath.

“Changes” first debuted as an album track on Black Sabbath’s 1973 album VOL. 4, surprising more than a few fans in the process – the band wasn’t exactly known for delivering piano ballads, after all – while also demonstrating Sabbath’s musical diversity. In the past, Ozzy has used the word “heartbreaking” to describe the song, which may explain what led him to join forces with his daughter Kelly to record a cover of the track.

For the new version of “Changes,” Ozzy revised the lyrics to mirror events that he and Kelly had shared over the years. Whether it was these tweaked lines, the novelty of hearing father and daughter singing together, or simply that listeners liked what they heard, the end result was that their version of the song went all the way to #1, selling over a million copies. Alas, Kelly has more or less concluded her recording career, at least for the time being, so it doesn’t seem as though we’re likely to hear a follow-up duet anytime soon, but at least we’ve got the (number) one.
