Rhino Factoids: Jagged Little Junos

20 years ago today, Canada’s famed Juno Awards, which represent the Great White North’s music industry’s achievements of the previous year, briefly turned into the Alanis Awards, with Alanis Morissette and her international breakthrough album, Jagged Little Pill, taking home five Junos.

That’s not to say that Ms. Morissette was the only woman who walked away from the ceremony a big winner. For one, Liona Boyd was named Best Instrumental Artist, while the award for Best Country Female Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year – sorry, that’s the Levi’s Entertainer of the Year – went to Shania Twain, who’d famously asked the musical question “Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?” Alanis, however, was named Best Female Vocalist and Songwriter of the Year, with Jagged Little Pill winning for Best Album and Hard Rock Album of the Year and “You Oughta Know” being named Single of the Year.

Alanis accepted her Album of the Year award by thanking her co-writer/producer Glen Ballard, who was absent because “he’s working away in his usual workaholic fashion,” then thanked the listeners for diving into the album in much the same way that she and Ballard had before closing by saying, “It’s a pleasure for me to do what I do.” By happy coincidence, that’s exactly the same sensation felt by the listeners who bought Jagged Little Pill!
