Phil and Don Everly have deep roots in country music; their father Ike was a guitarist who'd rubbed shoulders with Merle Travis, and the two boys grew up singing country songs on radio broadcasts before becoming huge hitmakers in the late 1950s with the advent of rock 'n' roll. In 1968, with bands like The Byrds experimenting with country-rock, the Everlys returned to the music of their youth for their final Warner Bros. studio album, ROOTS. The collection includes songs made famous by such greats as Jimmie Rodgers, Merle Haggard and George Jones, as well as recordings of the duo crooning country on a 1952 radio show. Phil Everly was born on this day in 1939, and we'll give the outstanding ROOTS another spin in his honor.
